Farming For the Homeless

John Stephenson is among the recipients of the 1999 President's Service Award. Mr. Stephenson, born in 1914, directs the Plaza Resolana Community Farm in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The farm is run by volunteer labor and donates its entire harvest to the homeless, hungry, and disabled of Sante Fe.

Mr. Stephenson owns the land on which the farm is located. His service to the community began in 1983 when he brought disabled persons to his farm to teach them farming techniques. Today, produce from the farm is distributed to over 30 agencies which serve individuals in need. John Stephenson is honored as a "Santa Fe Treasure" and as one of Santa Fe's "10 Who Made a Difference."
